‘Buffalo ’66’ & ‘Gamer’ Claim Spots In The Dissolve’s Movies’ 50 Greatest Pop Music Moments List!

Lakeshore Records has produced soundtracks for some of the most iconic films of the past decade.  Here are a couple of movie moments featuring music from our albums  in The Dissolve‘s Movies’ 50 Greatest Pop Music Moments list.  What are your favorite movie moments featuring music?

#18 Buffalo ’66
“Heart Of The Sunrise” by Yes
Buffalo ’66 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Download The Album: iTunes (UK Only) | Buy CD

To the minor extent that Vincent Gallo’s directorial debut has a plot, it involves his character, Billy, seeking revenge on the Buffalo Bills placekicker whose missed field-goal attempt ostensibly ruined Billy’s life. Near the end of the film, Billy finally shows up at the strip club owned by the retired player, gun in hand. Rather than accompany this surreally staged, grotesquely violent scene with music that might actually be heard in a strip club, or even music that would conventionally heighten the intensity of a shootout, Gallo chooses—yes!—Yes. Not only does the track’s sinuous groove provide plenty of offbeat tension as Billy walks in, it thrillingly shifts into high gear at the precise moment that he spots his victim. Prog kill! —Mike D’Angelo

#44 Gamer
“I’ve Got You Under My Skin” by Sammy Davis Jr.
Gamer (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Download The Album: iTunes | Buy CD

Set to the utterly appropriate sounds of Sammy Davis Jr.’s rendition of the Cole Porter standard “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” Castle and his minions boogie and bop like refuges from the creepiest Busby Berkeley film ever made, then break formation to test Kable in hand-to-hand combat. Hall dances like a puppet on strings, playing up the themes of control inherent not only in gaming, but also in fight and dance choreography.

Rudderless Soundtrack Available Tomorrow Ft. Billy Crudup, Anton Yelchin, Ben Kweller & Selena Gomez, Original Score By Eef Barzelay

So let it be known throughout the land: William H. Macy has balls of steel. In addition to juggling a busy, successful film and television career, he’s taken on a new role — filmmaker. His first feature film, “Rudderless”, is a poignant story that explores finding happiness in the midst of loss and pain. And you know what? It’s really damn good. -The Playlist

The highly anticipated soundtrack to Rudderless is available tomorrow on iTunes.  In William H. Macy’s directorial debut, Billy Crudup plays Sam, a former high-profile advertising executive whose life is torn apart by the sudden death of his son. Living off the grid on a docked sailboat, he wastes away his days while drowning his pain in alcohol. When Sam discovers a box filled with his son’s demo tapes and lyrics, his own child’s musical talent is a revelation for him, a grieving father yearning to reconnect with his son. He begins to explore his son’s unknown talent, obsessively learning his songs, until one day he decides to play one of them at a local bar. The song captivates Quentin, a young musician (Anton Yelchin) in the audience, and the two unlikely friends decide to form a rock ‘n’ roll band called Rudderless that becomes surprisingly popular and revitalizes both of their lives.

Kite (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Available Tomorrow, Music By Paul Hepker

“The challenge was to create an electronic score that still had heart. Capturing the aggression and edginess of an amped-up assassin is relatively simple when playing with twitchy machines – but the film demanded a musical layer that reflected our heroine’s pain, her vulnerability, her numbness,” -Composer Paul Hepker.

Available tomorrow: Kite (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by Composer Paul Hepker, who scored Rendition and the Academy Award winning film, Tsotsi).

Based on the groundbreaking, cult classic anime, KITE tells the story of Sawa (India Eisley), a young woman living in a corrupt society where crime and gangs terrorize the streets. When Sawa’s mother and policeman father are found victims of a grisly double homicide, she begins a ruthless pursuit for the man who murdered them. With the help of her father’s ex-partner, Karl Aker (Samuel L. Jackson), and a mysterious friend from her past (Callan McAuliffe), she becomes a merciless teen assassin, blasting her way through the dark world of human trafficking only to uncover a devastating truth.

LAKESHORE RECORDS PRESENTS
RUDDERLESS ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

Featuring Original Performances by Billy Crudup, Rudderless (featuring Ben Kweller and the film’s Anton Yelchin and Billy Crudup), Selena Gomez, and Ben Limpic

(September 15, 2014– Los Angeles, CA) – Lakeshore Records will release the RUDDERLESS – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on September 30th and on CD October 28, 2014.  The album features songs performed by the film’s Billy Crudup, Selena Gomez, and the ‘band’ Rudderless (featuring Billy Crudup, Anton Yelchin, and Ben Kweller).  Original score is by Eef Barzelay (the band Clem Snide).

“One of the major characters in the film is the music,” said the film’s director William H. Macy.  “Josh’s songs are all Sam has left of his son, and as the script developed, six of those songs became set pieces in the film. I knew that if those songs weren’t good, the film would never recover.  Simon Steadman and Charlton Pettus wrote the songs ”Home” and “Real Friends,” among others, to give Josh his voice.”

Tour Diary: John Velghe And His New Hearts Motorcycle Club Roadshow, Plus Music Video Debut!

Lakeshore Records recording artist John Velghe has embarked on the highway, traveling over 3000 miles by motorcycle and performing live music in support of a great cause.  We asked him to send us updates on his tour.  Here is his first update from the New Hearts Motorcycle Club Roadshow.

So here I am on a motorcycle, stopping for fuel twice as often compared to a van, and de-helmetting every hour or so just to get that weight off my head. Add a half-day of rain and a time zone change and I find myself barely making gigs in time. Traveling by motorcycle really magnifies one of the things I find most tedious about the touring band: the state of perpetual rock band tardiness!

Rain and a guitar and a bike2

I had a great night in Louisville playing at Open Gallery with a great local songwriter, Jacob Douglas and Kim Webber.

One of the things that occurred to me while listening to Jacob and Kim is how interesting it is that we still have regional songwriting dialects and lexicon in America. You wouldn’t know it by just listening to the radio and it’s hard to hear in that Great Homogenizer we call Modern Recording Technology; but with live music, regional upbringing really comes across. Not just dialect, but word choices and the stories that are told – not to mention the characters that populate those stories.

If you move around the country and play with people from different areas, you’ll notice this. It’s one of the things bigger acts miss when they choose to tour with the same act show after show. Songwriters who are comfortable in their own skin will show you their home in their songs. This is the thing Levon Helm brought to The Band. It’s the thing Steven Van Zandt and Springsteen discovered when they toured.

After just a couple of shows, this exposure to regionalism has been one of the best gifts of my tour. I’m looking forward to hearing more.

The 11th Hour’s Leonardo DiCaprio Addresses The United Nations On Climate Change

DiCaprio, one of the most outspoken celebrities on the issue of climate change, framed the topic in unsparing terms. “To be clear, this is not about just telling people to change their light bulbs or to buy a hybrid car; this disaster has grown beyond the choices that individuals make. This is now about our industries and our governments around the world taking decisive and large-scale action,” he said. Read the full story at The Hollywood Reporter.

Actor, documentarian and newly-minted UN Messenger Of Peace, Leonardo DiCaprio is well known for his efforts in tackling the issue of climate change.  The 11th Hour is a film produced and narrated by Leonardo Dicaprio.  DiCaprio made sure the music featured was equally representative of the intent and theme of the pro-environment documentary.  Released by Lakeshore Records, the soundtrack features bands like Sigur Ros, Cocteau Twins, Mogwai, Lamb, Arve Henriksen, Ulf Lohmann and Lukas Haas.

Director William H. Macy Talks To HuffPo About ‘Rudderless’ & The Importance Of Music In Film, Pre-order The Soundtrack

In an interview for The Huffington Post, William H. Macy talks about one of the most important things he did in preparation for his directorial debut in Rudderless:

The music was the other big great white shark that I was afraid of. I looked at a lot of films that have music in them and I faulted many of them because they were lovely films but the music wasn’t great. It wasn’t scintillating. It wasn’t as good as the film. I realized that’s the first decision I have to make and it’s the first thing I did. – William H. Macy.  Read the full story at Huffington Post.
